Our research about organisation and management is directed towards two main themes: The first is new forms of governance and management in the public sector, the second is regional development. Thus, most of the research is organised within two research groups, a group for research on local welfare management and a group for research on regional innovation and governance. Additional research themes are learning organisations, organisational identity, management in multicultural contexts and change in local governance.
The research group for local welfare management focuses the challenges facing local managers in a health and welfare sector which is becoming more and more complex. This complexity makes it demanding to deliver integrated services to the patients. Other challenges are related to restructuring and change, coordination, cost efficiency and quality. We investigate how increasing complexity and new forms of organisation influence local managers and their scope for action. We also ask what kind of knowledge, organisation and management is needed to create organisations which are learning and adapting to new conditions and at the same time cost-efficient. The group’s biggest project (2007-2010) is ”Local welfare management in a system under pressure”, financed by the Norwegian research council. Sub-projects are about learning leadership, the structure of clinical micro systems in hospitals and municipal care organisations, and also about the effects of the recent restructuring and integration of welfare delivery in Norway.
The research group on regional development studies regional restructuring, entrepreneurship, governance and leadership in regional development. What are the conditions for successful restructuring in communities and regions dominated by traditional industries? What are the factors enabling entrepreneurship in small and medium sized communities? How can public authorities, businesses and universities contribute to regional development through cooperation in regional innovation systems? What are the regional consequences of changes in public policy and governance? The currently biggest project of the group is “Regional restructuring in Sogn og Fjordane – an evaluation” (2005-2009), financed by Hydro and Sogn og Fjordane county council.
